H. R. Jothipala (Hettiarachchige Reginald Jothipala) was one of Sri Lanka’s most beloved and influential playback singers. Often called the golden voice of Sinhala cinema, he lent his vocals to thousands of film songs spanning from the 1950s to the 1980s. Known for his smooth, heartfelt singing and humble personality, he captivated generations of listeners and became an icon in Sinhala music.
His first major break came with “Siriyame Sara” in the 1956 film Surathalee, a song that opened the doors to a legendary career. He collaborated with celebrated composers like Premasiri Khemadasa and Sunil Santha, and his voice became inseparable from some of the greatest cinematic moments in Sinhala film history.
Among his most memorable songs are “Mee Jeevanaye”, “Sara Sande”, “Obata Divura Kiyannam”, and “Puruthugeesi Karaya”. Each of these captured different moods — from romance to patriotism — always delivered with his signature emotional power.
Jothipala passed away in 1987, shortly after performing at a patriotic concert. Even decades later, his songs continue to echo across radios, film reels, and hearts — a true testament to a voice that never fades.
