Loku Puthe Lyrics

Anduru hirikada
Awith pilkada
Simbiddi wenada wage..
Sudu mal damak athi
Wani wanee katu
Biththiye sithuwame mage...

Wasaagena nethu piyaagaddima
Mawaagena umbe ruwa hithe..
Pana alla innata bari wuna
Umba enna kaliyen loku puthe...

Mal wadam gok kola
Thorana kumakata
Wawagena umba duka hithe..
Balapan atha thiya papuwata
Heethalada rasneda puthe..

Piyan path deka wasediddima umbe
Kandulu dilihuna hati nethe..
Walith bara wadimanam umba pori
Mitakwath ihapan puthe
Pori mitakwath ihapan puthe..

Loku Puthe Lyrics English Translation

The dark drizzle
came to the veranda
and brushed it like before..
a garland of white flowers,
wilting, wilting, thorns,
in the painting in my mind…

As I cover and close my eyes,
picturing your form in my heart..
I could not hold onto my life
before you came, elder son…

Flower garlands, gok leaves,
what is a pandol for now?
bearing your sorrow in the heart..
look, put your hand on my chest,
is it cold or is it warm, son?

As your eyelids were closing,
how the tears glistened in your eyes..
if the sand lies too heavy on you,
scatter at least a fistful of parched grain,
scatter at least a fistful of parched grain, son..

Loku Puthe Song Meaning and Interpretation

This is a devastating song of grief, a parent mourning a dead child, addressed throughout to the loku puthe, the elder son. It opens in a house emptied by loss: the dark drizzle drifts onto the veranda and brushes it as it always did, but now a garland of white flowers is wilting, and thorns seem to grow in the picture the parent keeps replaying in the mind.

The ache is in small, unbearable gestures. Closing the eyes and conjuring the son’s face, the parent says they simply could not hold onto life before he came, before he was taken. Flower garlands, gok leaves, a pandol, what are any of the funeral decorations for now? Carrying his sorrow inside, the parent reaches out with a plea no one can answer: put your hand on my chest, son, is it cold or is it warm?

The last verse is almost too tender to bear. The parent remembers how the tears glistened in the boy’s eyes as his eyelids closed, and then speaks to him in the grave itself: if the sand lies too heavy on you, at least scatter a fistful of pori, the parched grain offered in Sri Lankan funeral rites. Written by a Buddhist monk, it is a raw, unflinching song about the one grief that never fully heals, a parent still talking to a child who cannot answer.
