Chamara Weerasinghe (චාමර වීරසිංහ, also romanized Chamara Weerasingha) is a Sri Lankan singer known for emotional, romance-driven Sinhala songs and for the open-air stage shows that built his following. Widely called the “Hadawathe Gayakaya” (the singer of the heart), he has been one of the country’s most consistently popular vocalists since the early 2000s.
Weerasinghe was born on 21 April 1981, the youngest of several children in a family from the Matara district in southern Sri Lanka. His father worked as a tailor, and Chamara began learning music and the arts during his school years. He moved into performing as a young man, building an audience slowly through live shows rather than a single overnight hit.
Across a career spanning more than two decades, Chamara Weerasinghe has released a string of albums and become a fixture of the Sinhala live-music circuit, where his romantic ballads and devotional numbers translate well to large outdoor crowds. His reputation rests on melody and feeling more than spectacle, which is why the affectionate nickname Hadawathe Gayakaya stuck. He has been named most popular male singer at the SLIM Kantar (Nielsen) People’s Awards many times over, one of the clearest measures of his reach with ordinary listeners.
From around 2017 his recording and touring schedule slowed because of health problems that led to several hospital stays, though he continued to perform after recovering.
Chamara Weerasingha’s best-known recordings move between tender love songs and devotional pieces tied to Buddhist sites and family themes. “Athugala Wehera Wadina” (ඇතුගල වෙහෙර වඳින) and “Rosa Pethi” are among his most-streamed tracks, while “Ma Adara Amma” (a song for a mother) remains one of his most requested at live shows.
For the Sri Lankan diaspora and listeners at home, Chamara Weerasinghe’s catalogue functions as a soundtrack of weddings, family gatherings, and quiet evenings. His pairing of plain-spoken Sinhala lyrics with warm, singable melodies is what keeps the songs in rotation long after their release, and it is why his name still draws full houses at live concerts.
