A man catches the scent of white sandalwood flowers, and just like that he is pulled back to a love he has lost. That is the whole song. One smell, and the woman he can no longer hold is suddenly close again, close enough that the tears start. He does not fight it. He leans into the fragrance and lets it bring her back, even though every memory it stirs up cuts at him.

In Sri Lankan culture the smell of sandalwood (sandun) carries a lot of weight. It is the scent of cooling balms, of temple offerings, and of farewell, sandalwood is burned at funeral pyres and used to anoint the dead. So when he says her face came to him “touched with the scent of sandalwood,” walking slowly toward him every evening like a creeping vine winding its way along, he is remembering her as something beautiful and gentle, but the very smell he ties her to is also the smell of loss and of goodbye. The image carries the love and the grief at the same time.

The deepest line is the quiet accusation in the middle. He says they were not two people piling up merit (parami) to walk together all the way to the endless road, that long journey through life after life that Buddhists believe couples sometimes vow to travel side by side. They had no such promise binding them. And yet she still left without a word, slipping away behind his back, never even telling him. That is what stings: not a broken vow, but a leaving so casual it did not feel it owed him an explanation.

By the last verse something shifts. He is still aching over the past, but now he chooses to take that pain in as if it were a kind of happiness. Even if she walked out and left him behind, he decides he will not turn his back on it and drown in sorrow. The sandalwood scent that once only hurt becomes a companion, the thing that keeps his loneliness from feeling empty. The song lands on that fragile peace, a man who has learned to hold on to the smell of someone gone, and to let it be enough.
