This is a prayer set to music, sung to the Buddha. The Sinhala word for him here is samiduni, the respectful “my Lord” that Buddhist devotional song uses, and every verse arrives at the same request: oba wewa, may you be. Not may you give me things, not may you fix my life. May you simply be present, inside me, the way light is present in a room.

The images in the first verse both belong to Sinhala poetry rather than everyday speech. Sanda wathura means “moon water”, the way moonlight pours over a village and fills every corner of it, and that is how the song describes metta, the Buddha’s loving kindness. Cool light, not fire. It reaches everything without burning anything. Then comes diwa mathura, a divine charm or mantra sitting on lip after lip, which is exactly what the Buddha’s name does in Sri Lanka: people say it when they stumble, when they are afraid, when they leave the house, and it passes from mouth to mouth all day long.

Each verse then asks for that presence in a smaller, more private place. First the heart is a lake and the singer wants lotuses growing in it, the flower carried to the temple every poya day and the old symbol of something clean rising out of muddy water. Next comes the pahan tæmba, the tall stone lamp pillar that stands in a temple courtyard and gets lit at dusk, one small flame holding back a lot of dark. Anyone who has walked into a temple in the evening knows that light. The singer wants it burning inside his own chest.

The last verse turns warmer and more human. Kindness travels the way a flower’s scent travels on the wind, without being pushed and without asking anything back, and love flows the way it flows in a mother’s voice, which is the gentlest comparison a Sinhala lyric can reach for. The song closes on bhava kathara, the desert of existence, the long thirsty crossing of birth after birth in saṃsāra. Set against that stretch of sand, the whole song makes sense as one request: be my shade, be my water, be my refuge for the walk. It is a quiet song and it leaves you calm rather than stirred, which is the point.
