The autumn moon (sarath sande) sets the mood. In Sinhala writing the autumn or post-monsoon moon is the clearest, coolest, most beautiful moon of the year, so calling on it is like saying their love belongs to the most perfect kind of night. When the lyric asks the beloved to “teach me a loving meditation” (pemwath bhawanawak), it borrows the word for quiet, focused prayer and turns it toward love, saying that being with this person feels almost like worship, something still and sacred.

The middle of the song fills with birds. Their sighs settle like roosting birds, their thoughts scatter and take flight like a flock rising into the sky, and when the beloved’s eyes light up, the speaker’s own eyes brim over.
