A young man is reassuring the woman he loves, gently brushing aside something that has clearly weighed on her. People around her have read her horoscope and warned that she is fated for loneliness, that the planets are set against her. He answers that none of it has touched what they have. Near him she has never felt alone, and to him she has never been lacking anything. That is where the song begins, with love standing up to a verdict that was handed to her before he ever came along.

The whole song turns on Sri Lankan astrology, which a listener outside the culture would miss. The “four-house horoscope” (hathara kendare) is the birth chart astrologers read to predict a life, and “graha dosa,” the planetary curse, is the idea that the position of the planets at birth can doom a person to misfortune, a lonely or difficult fate. Families take these readings seriously, and a chart that warns of loneliness can shadow someone for years. So when he says the planets have turned against her but he sees no lack in her, he is refusing to let a horoscope decide who she is. His love becomes the answer to the stars.

He takes that further as the song goes on. He has not married her by accident or arrangement but by a vow, and he promises not to lose love’s battle.
