A young man falls asleep and a girl comes to him in a dream, so gently that it feels real. She lies beside him, draws close in the cool of the night, and whispers something only for him. In that dream he feels the full comfort of being loved, and he says a new story has been written in the book of love stories he carries in his heart. That is a lovely Sinhala way of saying he has loved before, or at least imagined love before, and now here is another chapter, this dream girl who feels like the one.

He gives her a name, Mihiraviye, his dream princess, the sweetness of his life. The word itself carries that idea of something sweet and tender, so calling her Mihiraviye is like calling her his sweetness made into a person. Around the two of them in the dream come the butterflies, samanallu, a flock of them. In Sinhala song butterflies stand for lightness, beauty, and fleeting happiness, the kind of joy that lands softly and does not stay. They flutter around the couple as if drawn to the loving words, decorating the dream, sharing in it. Then, just as quietly, they fly off in search of flower pollen and disappear into the distance. That small detail is the warning the song slips in. Butterflies never settle for long.

Then he wakes. And the moment he opens his eyes he reaches for her, and she is not there. The bed beside him is empty and he is alone again. He looks at the butterflies as the answer to what happened to her: did you fly away too, the way they did, chasing something else, never meant to stay?
