Bees take wing to drink the nectar of flowers
If a flower has no nectar, they won’t come back again
But beside that flower, this bee grows lovesick

That flower I could never pluck…

A young man can’t sleep, and he knows exactly why. The girl he has fallen for isn’t beside him, and just picturing her face is enough to set his heart racing. That’s where the song opens, in the restless middle of the night, with a feeling so many of us know: wanting someone you don’t get to keep.

The ache here is that she was never his to begin with. He calls her a beautiful flower he could never pluck, and that line carries the whole weight of the song. In Sinhala love poetry the flower is the beloved, lovely and within sight but out of reach, and to pluck it is to make her your own. He can’t, so he can’t settle his heart either. He even says she is the first line of a love poem he can’t manage to write, the love is real but the words won’t come, the way new, unspoken feelings often refuse to take shape.

The middle verse turns to the old image of the bee and the flower. Normally the bee comes only for the nectar, and once the nectar is gone it never returns, that’s just how desire works, here today and gone tomorrow. But this bee is different. He sits beside the flower and grows lovesick, and the song makes the point plainly: he isn’t there for the nectar at all, he only wants to kiss the flower. It’s a quiet, lovely way of saying his feeling isn’t about wanting something from her. More than that, it’s tenderness, the kind that stays even when there’s nothing to gain.

By the end the love he can’t put into words has started to spill out on its own. Her face is drawn across his whole heart, so wherever he turns he sees her, and the feeling buried deep inside is slowly writing itself into being, a little at a time. He’s left exactly where he started, awake in the dark because she isn’t there, but now we understand the size of what’s keeping him up.
