A young man is looking back at the girl he met when he was barely more than a boy, and the whole song sits inside that memory. Nothing dramatic happens in it. He simply keeps returning to one moment, the way you do with a first love that never got a proper ending.

The phrase he opens with, samanal vayasa, is the Sinhala way of naming adolescence: the butterfly age. It carries everything a butterfly does, colour and lightness and the fact that it lasts no time at all. Saying he met her in that age already tells a Sri Lankan listener how the story ends before the second verse arrives.

The look is where the song does its real work. She never speaks. A word is said from the corner of her eyes, and his eyes are the ones that get caught by it. That sideways glance is a fixed piece of Sinhala love writing, the small signal a girl gives without committing to anything, and here it is enough to undo him. Then her smile settles in his heart as a mal yaaya, a stretch of flowers running to the horizon. Not one rose handed over, a whole field of them opening at once, which is how sudden it felt.

The last two lines pull the ground out. She comes near him in a dream, close enough to touch, and in the same breath she leaves him alone and walks away. The dream gives her back and takes her back in one movement, so even his sleep offers no rest from it. Whether she left him in life or only ever existed for him at that distance, the song does not say, and it does not need to.

What stays with you is the repeated mathakai, I remember, coming round again at the end and trailing off. He is not asking for her back. He is holding on to the fact that it happened at all, one glance and one smile from a season of his life that closed behind him, and the tenderness of the melody says he would not trade the ache for forgetting.
