A young man is so happily in love that he can barely keep it in, and the whole song is him letting that happiness pour out. From the very first line his heart is smiling, and his thoughts go scattering off like a flock of birds taking to the sky. That image is the key to the whole song. When you are this much in love your mind will not sit still, it keeps wandering, dreaming, lifting up, and he compares that restless lightness to birds rising into the air all at once.

From there he turns to the world around him and sees it the way only someone in love can. To him the whole world looks like a festival, like one of the bright carnival fairs that come with celebration in Sri Lanka, with joy spilling out everywhere he looks. Then he asks a small question that holds the song’s whole outlook: who in this world ever won anything by crying? It is his way of saying that sorrow gets you nowhere, so he chooses to live in the happiness love has given him rather than waste it on tears.

The last verse lifts the feeling even higher. He pictures the sun and the moon rising at the same time and the whole sky lighting up, which is impossible in real life, and that is exactly the point. Love has turned the ordinary world upside down for him in the most wonderful way, making it brighter than it has any right to be. And inside all that brightness he reaches for the one thing he really wants, to take her hand and dance, sweetly, the two of them together.
