Durakathanayakin Lyrics
Durakathanayakin mama oba amathami
Hamuwiya nohaki nisa
Mage hitha hadunana oba piligaththada
Athamun kiyana musa
Sayurata rala meniweralata rali meni
Apa badila unne
Thotupala harayana naukawak meni
Oba adila yanne
Mata thava mathakai mage mul geethaye
Thanuwa kiya dunna
Yana thana nirathuru pahanak aragena

Nidukin inu mana oba sathutin nam
Mage sathutada eyamaiDurakathanayakin Lyrics English Translation
Over the telephone I speak to you,
because we cannot meet.
Did you, who knows my heart, accept
the lie my own hands are telling?
Like waves to the sea, like ripples to the shore,
that is how we were bound together.
Like a boat that drifts away from the harbour jetty,
you are slipping away from me.
I still remember, in my very first song,
you were the one who taught me the tune.
Wherever you go I will take a lamp that never goes out
and follow close behind your steps.
You were the one who came, you are the one who leaves,
and I will stay right there, just as I am.
There is no need to grieve, for if you are happy,
then that, that alone, is my happiness too.

Durakathanayakin Song Meaning and Interpretation
A man picks up the telephone to say goodbye to the woman he loves, because the two of them can no longer meet face to face. That single detail, that he has to do this over a phone line instead of in person, tells you how far apart life has already pushed them. He even admits that the words he is speaking are a kind of lie his own hands are making him say, and then asks the question that hurts most: did she, who knows his heart so well, actually believe it? He is letting her go while quietly hoping she could see through him.
The heart of the song is in its two images. He says they were bound together the way waves belong to the sea and ripples belong to the shore, two things that are never really separate, that keep returning to each other by nature. Against that he sets the picture of a boat drifting away from the harbour jetty. In Sinhala song the harbour and the departing boat are a familiar way of saying that someone is leaving for good, casting off from the safe shore and moving out of reach. So in one breath he says they were inseparable, and in the next he watches her float away, and the gap between those two images is the whole ache of the song.
Then he reaches back to a tender memory. She was the one who taught him the tune of his very first song, so she is tied to the beginning of who he is, not just to his love but to his music and his voice. Because of that he makes a promise that is gentle rather than desperate: wherever she goes, he will carry a lamp that never goes out and walk behind her steps. The unfading lamp is his love and his watchfulness, a light he will keep burning for her no matter how far she travels, even if he only ever follows from a distance.
What makes the ending land is how selfless it is. He does not beg her to stay or ask her to grieve. He simply says he will remain right where he is, unchanged, and that there is no reason for sorrow, because if she is happy, her happiness is enough to be his own. That is the quiet, grown-up kind of love this song is about: loving someone enough to let them sail away, and finding your own peace in knowing they are well.
