A child sits on the sand outside a one room hut by the sea, watching the water, waiting for a father who has gone out fishing and has not come back. It is Christmas week. The wind is up, the drizzle has turned cold, and the same sea that feeds the family has turned rough. Everything a child is supposed to want at Christmas, new clothes, sweets, a full table, has been quietly set aside for one thing only: for the boat to come back.

The line that carries the whole song is the plea in the chorus, “come home today at least, never mind the fish.” In a fishing village a man does not return empty handed if he can help it, because an empty boat means an empty week. The child cancels that whole arrangement in one breath. Bring nothing, just come. That is a small line with the weight of a family’s whole fear inside it.

The candles do a lot of work here. They are the ones lit at home in front of the shrine for a safe return, and they are also the Christmas candles, burning down while the days go by and nobody comes up the beach. Melting wax becomes the clock the child cannot stop. The star is the other big image. Sri Lankan homes hang a paper star lantern at Christmas, and this house has none, so the child asks the Lord for a single star instead, and then decides the hut is already glowing. The pretty silk clouds drifting off toward the town say the rest of it plainly: the bright, comfortable Christmas is happening somewhere else, over the city, and it floats past this shoreline without stopping.

The last verse is the one that stays with you. The child is not hungry, has no candle to offer, and so does not go to church at all, and puts it not as bitterness but as a promise. When father comes back, then I’ll come and hear the carols. Faith in this song is not a grand thing. It is a mother and a child saying the rosary softly while the wind pushes into the hut, and a child bargaining with God for one small return.
