In the season when the veralu ripen…

I piled up baskets of sand thinking of you
I bore the hardship gladly, because you were mine
Every kemmura day (the days for offerings at the devalaya) I made my offerings to the gods
and all I asked was that they give you to me, and now I’m alone

A young man is standing on the bank of the Madu Ganga where he used to stand with the girl he loved, and the river does not look the same to him any more. He counts time the way village people do, not by months but by what is ripening. When the veralu were coming in, she loved him and everything felt bright. By the time the rata del were dropping, she had gone and left him holding the hurt.

Those two fruit seasons carry the whole story. Veralu (Ceylon olive) come in one part of the year and rata del (breadfruit) fall in another, so naming them is his way of saying how much of the year has passed and how completely his life turned over in between. He reaches for the full moon to describe her love, and in Sinhala song the moon stands for a calm, cooling brightness rather than a dazzling one. That is the light that has gone out of him.

The middle of the song belongs to the river. He asks why the bank at Madu has gone muddy, and the honest answer is that the water has not changed, he has. Her feet no longer press that bank, so the current that once looked lovely to him now looks troubled and forlorn. Sinhala lyric does this again and again, letting the landscape carry the feeling the singer will not say straight out.

Then comes the most local verse, and the hardest one. He hauled sand out of the Madu Ganga, basket after basket, and the work never felt heavy because he was doing it for her. On every kemmura day, the Wednesdays and Saturdays when people take offerings to the devalaya, he asked the gods for one thing, and it was her. He kept his side of it, the labour and the vows, and he is still on that bank alone. That quiet unfairness is what stays with you when the last line comes back around and he says once more that his world went dark.
