Wayo (වායෝ) is a Sri Lankan folk-fusion band founded and led by singer and guitarist Sangeeth Wijesuriya. The group blends traditional Sinhala melody with Indian and Western classical influences, and it reached a wide audience with the 2012 hit Api Kawuruda (අපි කවුරුද).
Wayo came together in the early 2010s around Wijesuriya, a musician whose performing career stretches back to the late 1980s. The band’s identity rests on fusing folk roots with contemporary arrangement, an approach that set it apart from the mainstream pop of its era.
The song that carried Wayo to popular recognition was Api Kawuruda, released around 2012. The track was written and composed by Senaka Batagoda, and Wayo’s recording of it became one of the most widely played Sinhala songs of the period. Beyond their breakthrough, Wayo built a catalogue of reflective, melody-driven songs. Anagathaye (අනාගතයේ), written and composed by Sanuka, is among the band’s most loved later works, known for its meditative lyrics about searching for a way forward. The band’s frontman Sangeeth Wijesuriya also records under his own name.
Wayo’s appeal among Sri Lankan listeners and the diaspora comes from its balance of accessible melody and folk-rooted texture.
