Sangeeth Wijesuriya (also spelled Sangeeth Wijesooriya, සංගීත් විජේසූරිය) is a Sri Lankan singer, guitarist, and music director, best known as the founder and frontman of the band Wayo. His warm, folk-rooted voice and acoustic arrangements made him one of the most widely streamed Sinhala pop artists of the 2010s, with songs such as Ran Ran Ranwan Sela Anda and Sawandari reaching millions of plays.
Wijesuriya first drew attention after winning a national singing competition, and he later trained seriously as a musician, earning a Grade 8 Trinity Guildhall certification on classical and flamenco guitar. In 2012 he founded the band Wayo, which became his main creative vehicle and built a sound that draws on Sri Lankan folk melody alongside Western and Indian classical influences. He works as a singer, composer, and music director, and several of the songs on Lyrics-lk credit him in more than one of those roles.
Among the recordings most associated with him are Pinwanthiye Mage, Ma Dama Noyanu Sonduri, and the much-loved Nandana Sihina Gange. The acoustic ballad Agatanna is credited to Wijesuriya together with Wayo, reflecting how closely his solo identity and the band overlap. He has also worked alongside other Sri Lankan vocalists, including Sashika Nisansala.
What distinguishes Sangeeth Wijesooriya is the combination of a trained guitarist’s arrangement sense with an unforced, conversational vocal delivery, which suits the romantic and devotional themes that run through much of his catalogue, including the popular tribute song Amma. His recordings carry a large following among Sri Lankan listeners at home and in the diaspora, and Lyrics-lk hosts the Sinhala lyrics with English translation for many of his most requested songs.
Every Sinhala lyric, composition, and song credit by Sangeeth Wijesuriya.
