A young man is lying awake remembering a night spent with the one he loves, and he can’t quite tell anymore whether it really happened or whether he only dreamed it. That question, “was that a dream?”, comes back at the end of each verse, and it is the whole feeling of the song. The night was so tender and so perfect that now, in the cold light of being apart, it feels too good to have been real.

He opens with a small, lovely turn: he stayed awake the whole night, and the tears that fell from his eyes ended up as smiles. In Sinhala love songs the line between crying and smiling often blurs like this when the feeling is overwhelming, the tears are not grief, they are the kind you cry when something is almost too sweet to hold. He says he kept the whole night lit, awake with the stars, the way new lovers lose track of time and the dark just glows. Then he places the memory in a garden in spring, flowers everywhere, the two of them in a quiet corner, lip to lip and face to face, letting feelings they had kept hidden finally become love.

Most of the imagery is the soft, intimate kind. The “lake of the heart” with flowers blooming in it is his own chest opening up, full of feeling, and kissing those flowers is the gentleness of the moment. He says her sweetness left him drunk, that she called him to the bed of love and rocked him to sleep on a river of dreams. The jasmine petals he scatters, saman pethi, carry their own weight here: jasmine is the flower of weddings, of pure and fragrant love in Sri Lankan life, and to spread its petals on a bed is to make the night sacred and soft. He ends resting his head on her chest, lulled like a child, and even that comfort he isn’t sure of: was it real, or did I dream it?

What stays with you is the ache hiding inside all that sweetness. He keeps describing pleasure, the sweet pain of love, the longing it stirred, the singing that rocked him to sleep, but the repeated “was that a dream?” tells you he is alone now, holding a memory so beautiful it has started to feel unreal. The song lets you sit in that warm, half-believing place where a perfect night and a longed-for dream become impossible to tell apart.
