Igilenna oba ekka...
Sanda Mithuri Lyrics English Translation
To fly into the sky with you
To drink in that coolness to my heart’s content
Grant me that wish, when will you come, bringing dewdrops and a rain of flowers
Moon companion, let the heart be sweetened
Let the falling tears be turned into clusters of dew…
In a world that gives me no room to just be myself
Let us draw away and become only us
Let us lay the first roots of a new world
Let us compose a love poem beyond price
Let the dew rain fall, let the noon heat grow moist
Let love put out new shoots upon the earth
A dream soothed, yet burning in the sunbeam..
To fly into the sky with you…
In a world that gives no room to live life fully
Let us draw away and grow wet in the falling dew rain
Let love become love itself
Let an unbranded, free life bloom
Let the dew rain fall, let the noon heat grow moist
Let love put out new shoots upon the earth
A dream soothed, yet burning in the sunbeam..
To fly into the sky with you…

Sanda Mithuri Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is asking the woman he loves to run away with him, not to some far country, but into a private world the two of them can make their own. From the very first line he wants to fly into the open sky with her and feel that coolness settle over his heart. The whole song is one long wish, repeated softly, for her to come to him and for the two of them to be left alone together.
He calls her “Sanda Mithuri,” his moon companion. The moon runs all the way through Sinhala love songs as the image of a calm, gentle beauty, light that cools and soothes rather than dazzles, so naming her after it tells you what she is to him: not someone who excites him but someone whose presence makes him peaceful. He even asks that the tears falling from her eyes be turned into clusters of dew, sorrow remade into something clean and beautiful.
The pull of the song is the wish to get away from a crowded, watching world. He keeps saying the world gives him no room to be himself, no room to really live, so he asks her to draw aside with him until it is “only us.” There they would lay the first roots of a new world and write a love poem that has no price on it. The dew and the soft rain he keeps calling for stand for tenderness and renewal in Sinhala imagery, the cool relief that ends a hard, dry season, and the green shoots of love rising from wet earth carry that same idea of something new growing once the heat lets go. He wants a life that is “unbranded” and free, love allowed to be nothing but love, with no label or claim stamped on it by anyone else.
There is a gentle ache underneath all the sweetness. The dream is soothing, but it still burns a little in the sunbeam, the longed-for world is not here yet, and he is still waiting, asking, “when will you come.” What the song leaves you holding is that quiet hope, two people wanting only to belong to each other, and the cool, dew-soft world they keep imagining just out of reach.
