A young man is talking to the girl who left him, and the first thing he says is the thing that hurts the most: he loved her, and she never even understood that he did. They have parted, but he admits she is still his whole life. That gap, between how much he gave and how little she saw, is the wound the whole song presses on.

He reaches for the sky to describe where she is now. She has become like a little star far away in the distance, still there, still visible, but completely out of reach. In Sinhala song the distant star is a gentle way of saying someone has gone somewhere you can never follow, close enough to look at and ache for, too far to ever touch again. From there he turns the questions on himself: the pain cuts into him, the blame he carries burns him through the night and the day, and he keeps asking why he ever loved her at all.

The second half softens into something more like pleading. He calls her “my dear” even now, and asks her to just explain it to him. She seemed happy to walk away, and he cannot make sense of that. Was something missing in his love? Then why did she come close in the first place, if she was only going to leave? The last line is the bitterest turn of all, when he wonders whether her love was never real, whether all of it was just a way to fool him.

What stays with you is that he is not angry so much as bewildered. He still uses tender words, still calls her his life, but underneath he is trying to understand how love that felt so complete to him could have meant so little to her. It is the ache of being the only one who was truly in love.
