This is a fisherman’s song, the voice of a poor man who goes out to sea every day to keep his family fed. He opens by laying his troubles bare: his canoe (the oru, the small wooden outrigger boat fishermen use along the Sri Lankan coast) has rotted, the ropes of his fishing gear have worn through and snapped. Everything he owns is falling apart. And yet, he says, he still has to go. There is no choice. The sea is the only way to keep his life and his family’s lives going.

The small, tender details are what make the song ache. Before he leaves, he takes the rice his wife stayed awake all night to cook for him, and he pushes off into the deep ocean with his heart full of hope. He is not chasing riches, he is going far out into the deepest water just to feed his children, hauling seer fish and big sharks back to shore. The work itself is brutal. The sun beats down, the wind rips at his sail, the great waves rear up, and he calls it plainly what it is: a fight between life and death. Every trip out is a gamble with his own survival.

The most moving image comes near the end. On the white sand of the shore, his children stand and wait, watching the road, hoping to see their father come back. When he finally returns, worn out and aching, his whole body soaked in sweat like a man caught in the rain, he gives the credit not to his own strength but to the grace of the gods (devi pihiten). That phrase carries the quiet faith of a fishing community that knows how easily the sea can take a man, and feels lucky every time it gives him back.
