Lighting the blue gem on the balcony,
the heart flutters, the naa-flowers bloom,
you are far away, because I am poor,
I will come in a dream, to carry you away
Lighting the blue gem on the balcony,
the heart flutters, the naa-flowers bloom,
you are far away, because I am poor,
I will come in a dream, to carry you away
to carry you away
My heart, gone dark, on the sleepless night,
begs light of you, my dear,
in the weary, half-closed eyes,
your form was formed, in the heart’s solace
Lighting the blue gem on the balcony,
the heart flutters, the naa-flowers bloom,
you are far away, because I am poor,
I will come in a dream, to carry you away
The full moon rose this night,
I feel that you are right beside me,
in the hour that joins with those eyes,
may this love-dream never wake,
may this love-dream never wake
Lighting the blue gem on the balcony,
the heart flutters, the naa-flowers bloom,
you are far away, because I am poor,
I will come in a dream, to carry you away

Sandaluthale Song Meaning and Interpretation
A tender, moonlit love song about longing across the distance that poverty creates. On the balcony, lighting the blue gem of moonlight, the heart flutters and the naa-flowers bloom; but the ache underneath is plain: you are far away, because I am poor. Unable to reach her in life, he makes a vow that becomes the song’s refrain, I will come in a dream, to carry you away.
The middle is the sleepless night of longing. His heart gone dark begs light from her; and in his weary, half-closed eyes, her form takes shape in the heart’s solace. Only in near-sleep, in imagination, can he be with her.
The close is the dream nearly fulfilled. The full moon rose this night, and he feels her right beside me; and in the hour their eyes seem to meet, his one wish is that this love-dream never wake. He would rather stay asleep with her forever than return to a waking world that keeps them apart. Sung by the Marians to words by Sampath Fernandopulle, it is a soft, wistful love song about a poor man’s love for a distant woman, and the moonlit dream in which he finally carries her away.
