This is a Christmas carol, and it announces the birth of Christ the way the old nativity story does, through a sign in the sky. The “comet blazing in the heavens” is the star of Bethlehem, and here it does more than shine: it bathes the whole world in a coolness of peace. In the Sri Lankan imagination coolness (sisila) is relief and blessing after heat, so the star’s light falls on the earth like the calm every heart is waiting for.

Each verse turns that arrival into something the listener can feel. Darkened, troubled thoughts are washed clean, and streams of peace pour out “in all ten directions,” a phrase that simply means everywhere, to the ends of the earth. Withered hearts are filled with life again, and gentle breezes of peace settle over the land.

The refrain repeats the single fact the whole song rests on: samidun wadiyaa, “the Lord has come.” The last line names who that is, “to the world a prince was born,” the kumaru, the Christ child. It is a warm, uncomplicated hymn of welcome, the feeling of a world that was heavy and dry suddenly given light, coolness and life on the night of the nativity.
