A young man is telling the girl he loves just how much she means to him, and he can barely find the words for it. He calls her beautiful and innocent in the same breath, and right away you can feel that what draws him in is not just how she looks but how gentle and unspoiled she is. He says his love grows day by day, and then admits something sweet and a little helpless: his heart is so full of feeling that everything he has managed to say to her so far is only half of what is really inside him. That gap between what he feels and what he can say is the heart of the song.

In the middle of the song he reaches for one of the softest images in Sinhala love poetry. He pictures holding her the way you would hold a lotus cradled in your two cupped palms (dothata gath nelumak). In Sri Lanka the lotus is the flower you carry to the temple, something pure and precious that you protect from any harm, and you hold it with both hands so it will not bruise. So when he says he wants to keep her close to his heart like a lotus in his hands, he is saying she is something sacred to him, to be handled with care and devotion, not grabbed at. Each thought of her, he says, feels like drawing in a fresh breath, a small new beginning.

The last part lifts the whole feeling beyond a single lifetime. He talks about sasara, the long chain of births and rebirths in Buddhist belief, the endless cycle a soul travels through life after life. He prays that across all of it, birth after birth, their hands will never come apart. This is how a Sri Lankan says the deepest kind of forever: not just till death, but through every life still to come. By the end he is no longer just praising her, he is making a promise. She is the one his heart has chosen, she is his very life, and he vows to keep her safe and cherished, every day, with all the tenderness he has.
