A man is travelling alone through Italy, far from home, and everywhere he goes he carries the ache of missing someone he loves. The whole song is built like a journey across the map of Italy, and the place names are not just scenery. They are the milestones of his loneliness. He moves from Siracusa and Sicilia in the south, up through Genova, Messina, Verona, Milano, all the way to Rome, and at every stop the same line comes back: man Italiye thani wuna, I am alone here in Italy. That repeated line is the heartbeat of the song.

The Italian words sprinkled through the verses are real Italian, dropped in the way a traveller picks up the local speech. Pronto is what Italians say when they answer the phone, allora is “well then” or “so”, ciao is hello and goodbye, and Crono carries the sense of time passing. He scatters them almost playfully, as if to show how far from Sri Lanka he has wandered, yet underneath the playfulness sits the same homesickness and the same longing for the person who is not beside him.

There is a strong thread of faith running through it too. He washes his sins in holy water, runs to the church where Saint Anthony shines, visits the rose church in Brescia and the Vatican in Rome, and he calls the one he loves his “dream angel” standing in that holy place. To a Sri Lankan ear this marks him as a Catholic, and the churches of Italy, the seat of his faith, become the places where his devotion and his loneliness meet. He says the miracles he has seen there are so many that if she had only seen them with her own eyes, even she would believe. The beauty around him, the Leaning Tower of Pisa that leaves him amazed, only sharpens the pain that she is not there to see it with him.

By the last verse the cold of Milan settles over everything, and the absence becomes unbearable. He reaches for the most violent image he can find: Mount Etna, the great volcano of Sicily, erupting into fire. That is what his heart feels like, burning and overflowing, and yet, he says, even all that fire cannot calm it. The volcano is not destruction here so much as the size of his longing. He has crossed a whole beautiful country and still cannot put out the ache of being alone, far from the one he wants beside him.
