(Henna drawn in fine lines across your palm,
I love to watch how beautiful you look, oh how I love it, Laila…//)
(Under the high noon sun of the Sahara, never minding how it burns,
hand in hand, let us walk together, Laila…//)
I long to come to you, Laila, just show me the way, Laila
I’m in love, Laila, how beautiful you are
Henna drawn in fine lines across your palm,
I love to watch how beautiful you look, oh how I love it, Laila
(Princess of the date palm groves dripping with sweetness, Laila,
rest your head on my shoulder and tell me you love me…//)
I long to come to you, Laila, just show me the way, Laila
how beautiful you are, my Laila, I love you, Laila
(Henna drawn in fine lines across your palm,
I love to watch how beautiful you look, oh how I love it, Laila…//)

Marathondi Iri Alle (Laiyla) Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is head over heels for a girl he calls Laila, and the whole song is him talking to her, telling her how lovely she is and how badly he wants to be with her. He keeps coming back to one small, tender picture: the henna drawn in delicate lines across her palm. In Sinhala the word is marathondi, the same reddish-orange dye, mehendi, that brides and young women paint on their hands for weddings and celebrations. Watching those patterns on her skin is enough to make him happy, and he says so over and over, the way someone in new love can’t stop noticing the smallest beautiful thing about the person they want.
The song wraps the romance in a desert, Arabian setting, and that is the key to its imagery. The name Laila itself comes from the old Arabic love story of Laila and Majnun, the great tale of a man driven half mad with longing, so calling her Laila already signals devotion. He pictures walking with her hand in hand under the blazing midday sun of the Sahara, not caring how it burns. That heat is the point: it says no hardship matters as long as they are together. Then he turns to date palm groves heavy and dripping with sweetness, calling her the princess of that place, and the lushness of the image stands for how sweet and rich her presence feels to him.
By the last verses the bravado softens into something simpler and more vulnerable. He asks her to rest her head on his shoulder and just say she loves him. After all the praise of her beauty, what he really wants is that one quiet word back. The repeated “show me the way, Laila” carries that ache, he is ready to come to her, he only needs her to let him in. What the listener is left holding is the warmth of young, hopeful love, dressed up in henna, sun and sweetness, and underneath it all the plain longing to be told he is loved in return.
