In Sinhala the word is marathondi, the same reddish-orange dye, mehendi, that brides and young women paint on their hands for weddings and celebrations. The song wraps the romance in a desert, Arabian setting, and that is the key to its imagery. The name Laila itself comes from the old Arabic love story of Laila and Majnun, the great tale of a man driven half mad with longing, so calling her Laila already signals devotion.
