A river of tears, a ford of smiles,
a cattle-boat, a bed of comfort, //
a dark night, a city of stars,
among people, a new man //
Born.. //
sky and earth,
born.. //
the redeemer Jesus is born
To set the slaves free, to open blind eyes, //
to heal the inhuman, the heartless officials
Born.. //
sky and earth,
born.. //
the redeemer Jesus is born
To show the truth, to go to a cross, //
to bring down the rulers brimming with wealth and glory
A river of tears, a ford of smiles,
a cattle-boat, a bed of comfort, //
a dark night, a city of stars,
among people, a new man //

Ipadila Song Meaning and Interpretation
A Christmas carol built on stark contrasts and a strong note of social justice. It opens with paired images of the world Jesus is born into, a river of tears, a ford of smiles, a cattle-boat, a bed of comfort, a dark night, a city of stars, and, among ordinary people, a new man. The refrain rings out simply: born.. the redeemer Jesus is born, in sky and on earth.
The middle names his mission, and it is liberation. He is born to set the slaves free, to open blind eyes, and to heal the inhuman, the heartless officials. The birth is not just tender but transformative, aimed squarely at injustice and hard-heartedness.
The close sharpens that further, echoing the Magnificat. He comes to show the truth, to go to a cross, and to bring down the rulers brimming with wealth and glory. The song ends back on its opening images of a world of tears and smiles, darkness and stars. Sung by Prasanna Rosa (a Marians original) to words and music by Richard Manamudali, it is a striking Christmas carol that celebrates the birth of Jesus as the coming of a liberator, freeing the enslaved, healing the heartless, and lifting up the lowly.
