Sudu Muna Dakaganna Lyrics
Sudu muna dekaganna inne bala
Mama adarei mama obe pemwatha
Obe labune mage pera pin nisa
Rekagannawa me divi athi thura
Mata obe adare semada wasana
Obe adare semada wasana.......
Raya ninda naene obe gena hitanne
Sitha aetha yai pawela
Ran kekula mage obe dewliyak se
(mage nethu pinai rae pura.....///)
Sudu muna.....
Sanda pana wage sudu muna obage
Pinwanthiye wasana
Peruman puranne rekaganna senehe
(obe adare theruna.....///)
Sudu muna.....
Sudu Muna Dakaganna Lyrics English Translation
I’m waiting just to see your fair face
I love you, I am the one who loves you
You came to me because of the merit I earned long ago
I will protect this love as long as I live
Your love is my good fortune, every single day
Your love is my good fortune, every single day…….
I can’t sleep at night, I lie here thinking of you
My mind drifts far away
You are my golden bud, like a goddess to me
(My eyes well up all night long…..///)
Your fair face…..
Your fair face is like moonlight
You blessed one, you are my good fortune
I keep fulfilling my vows to hold on to this love
(I have come to understand your love…..///)
Your fair face…..

Sudu Muna Dakaganna Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is lying awake at night, unable to sleep, thinking about the girl he loves. The whole song is him talking straight to her, telling her how much she means to him and promising to hold on to this love for the rest of his life. The feeling is gentle and steady, more the quiet devotion of someone who has found the person he wants forever than the restless ache of new infatuation.
When he says she came to him “because of the merit I earned long ago,” he is reaching for a very Sri Lankan, Buddhist way of explaining love. The idea is that good deeds in past lives earn you good things in this one, so meeting her feels less like luck and more like a reward he somehow deserved across lifetimes. The same belief runs through the rest of the song. He calls her a “blessed one” (pinwanthiye), a woman rich in that same earned merit, and says he keeps “fulfilling his vows,” the language of the perfections a person builds up over many lives. Loving her, to him, is almost a spiritual practice.
The images he chooses for her are the tender ones Sinhala song saves for someone precious. She is his “golden bud,” a flower not yet opened, fresh and his to cherish. He compares her to a goddess, putting her a little above ordinary life. Most of all he keeps returning to her “fair face like moonlight.” In Sinhala love poetry the moon stands for a calm, cooling kind of beauty, soft light that soothes you rather than dazzles, so the comparison says her face brings him peace.
By the last lines the night has caught up with him. His eyes well up as he lies awake, and he admits he has finally understood her love. What the listener is left holding is that mix of longing and contentment, a man kept up at night not by doubt but by how deeply he feels, grateful that someone like her ever found her way to him.
