A young man stands at a riverbank watching the one he loves walk out of his life, and he reaches for the river to say what the parting feels like. Just as the water cuts through its own banks and pours away, never to return, she is leaving and tearing his heart down the middle as she goes. The river that wears away its own edges is loss you cannot hold back; once it moves, it is gone.

In the middle verse his mind drifts to the snowy peaks of Mandara and the cool shade of a sandalwood forest. In Sinhala poetry these are the images of perfect coolness and calm, the most soothing, healing places a person could be. He sets them up only to ask the question that breaks him: even surrounded by all that comfort, how did you leave without finding any peace, and without leaving me any? The beauty of the picture only sharpens how unsettled and comfortless the parting really is.

The last verse turns to the kadupul, the night-blooming cereus that opens for just a few hours after dark and is treasured in Sri Lanka as rare and almost sacred. He gathered those precious flowers, freshened them with dew, and strung them on threads of gold to make a garland, and then he simply waited for her to arrive. That waiting is the heart of the song. He prepared the most beautiful welcome he could, something fragile and fleeting like the kadupul itself, and she never came, or came only to leave.

What the listener is left holding is the ache of one-sided devotion. He did everything right, he waited with a garland in his hands, and still the river carried her away. The song closes on that return to the riverbank, the loss flowing past him while he stands there with flowers that no one will wear.
