Ma Nisa Oba Lyrics
Ma nisa oba nopiru perum
Ma nisa oba nopethu pathum
E sinaha meda itu wevi nam
Aye nawath kam ne iting //
Ko eda oba atha palanduwa
Muduwa ko koido
Ne mage sitha an kenek gen
Kiwado naetido
Ma nisa oba nopiru perum...
Maligawake raja kenek wath
Yanawado kaedawa
Vasanawan e sandaawata
Ma awith yanawa
Ma nisa oba nopiru perum...
Ma Nisa Oba Lyrics English Translation
The merits you never fulfilled, all because of me
The wishes you never made, all because of me
If they could come true in the midst of that smile of yours
Then it doesn’t matter if I never come back again //
Where is that ring you once slipped onto my finger?
Where has it gone, where could it be?
“My heart belongs to no one else”
Did you say that, or did you not?
The merits you never fulfilled, all because of me…
Even if some king from a palace
comes to take you away
Blessed be that evening
I will come, and then I will go
The merits you never fulfilled, all because of me…

Ma Nisa Oba Song Meaning and Interpretation
A man is quietly letting go of the woman he loves, and the whole song is him telling her it’s alright. He blames himself for the life she missed out on while she was with him: the prayers she never got to finish, the small wishes she set aside, all the things she gave up because of him. If giving her up now means those things can finally come true and she can smile again, then he is at peace with never seeing her again. That is the heartbreak the song opens with, love that has decided to step aside for the other person’s sake.
In Sinhala, “perum” and “pathum” are the vows, the merit and the hopes a person quietly carries, often the kind tied to prayers for a good life or a good marriage. When he says she never got to fulfil them “because of me,” he isn’t accusing her of anything. He is taking the blame onto himself, the way someone does when they love a person enough to believe they were the obstacle.
The middle verse is the ache underneath it all. He asks where the ring is now, the one she once slipped onto his finger, and he remembers her words: that her heart was for no one else. He is half asking her and half asking himself whether any of it was real, the way you replay an old promise when the relationship is already slipping out of your hands.
By the last verse he has made his peace. Even if a king were to come from his palace and carry her away, he doesn’t fight it. He blesses that evening instead and says he will come, and then he will go, meaning he will show up to wish her well and then walk out of her life for good. It is the gentlest, saddest kind of love, the kind that measures itself not by holding on but by how willingly it can let the other person go to something better. What the listener is left holding is that quiet dignity, a man stepping back into the dark so the person he loves can walk into the light.
