A young man has seen a woman, and now he cannot stop seeing her. She is not beside him in this song. She arrives the way a picture arrives, forming in front of his eyes when he is awake and again when he is asleep, and he is happy to let her keep coming. That is the whole situation, and the song stays inside it rather than moving on to a meeting or a parting.

The title carries a lot of that. Prathihari comes from the Sanskrit word for a miracle, something that appears where there was nothing, and nura is the warm, flirting pull between two people. Put together, the opening line says her presence works on him like a small miracle he did not ask for. Shehan Galahitiyawa’s word choice through the song is deliberately old and literary, the vocabulary of classical Sinhala poetry rather than everyday speech, which gives her the distance of a figure in a painting.

The images are worth unpacking. Meena dasa, fish eyes, is one of the oldest compliments in Sinhala and Sanskrit verse: long, tapering, slightly curved eyes shaped like a fish, and eyes that never stay still. Chandrashobha, the glow of the moon, is the standing image for beauty that cools you instead of dazzling you, so her looks calm him rather than excite him. Then come seya and chaya rupa, shadow and shade-image, and this is where the song shows its hand. What he is holding is a projection, a shape thrown by his own mind. He knows it, and he keeps it anyway.

The one direct line in the song is the question in the chorus, enavaado, will you come. He is asking a shadow to walk with him through the field of dreams, which tells you how far this has gone and how little he expects in return. Nothing gets resolved. The song ends the way it started, with him saying that this dream brings its own beauty, and by then you understand that the dream is the point. Anyone who has carried someone around in their head for weeks without ever saying a word to them will recognise exactly where he is.
