Bound in cords of passion’s fire,
tearing through the curtain of half-sleep,
at the height of an embrace gone milk-white,
loving, full of desire, the color white…

A battle where paired swan wings dance,
I sink, made pure, into the pond’s water.
Churning, churning, my mind drunk on the sweetness of her lips,
the goddess pressed close between our sighs.

A young man is lost in a night of passion with the woman he loves, and the whole song is his attempt to put that feeling into words. He calls her Swetha, “white,” and white runs through every verse as the color of this love. In Sinhala poetry white is the color of purity, of milk, of something clean and unspoiled, so even at the most heated moment he keeps reaching for it, as if to say the desire he feels is not something cheap or shameful but something pure.

The images are deliberately old and literary, the kind a classical lyricist would use. He says he is bound in cords of fire, passion holding him the way rope holds a body, and that this passion has torn through the curtain of half-sleep, the drowsy in-between of night where the two of them lie. The embrace turns “milk-white,” kshira meaning milk, a soft, pure image laid right over the heat. Then comes the picture of two swans, their wings touching as they dance. In our poetry a pair of swans, the hansa, is the standing image of lovers moving together, and he turns their closeness into a gentle “battle,” love as a sweet kind of struggle. He says he sinks into the pond’s water, made pure, the way a person bathes and is cleansed, so the act of love itself becomes something that purifies rather than stains.

Two phrases carry the most weight. He calls her eyes meena nethra, “fish eyes,” which sounds strange in English but is high praise in Sinhala and Sanskrit poetry, long, wide, restless eyes that move like a fish in water, the mark of a beautiful woman. And those eyes, he says, are an arrow of desire that has struck him. The other is the steady churning, “kalata kalata,” his mind turning over and over, drunk on the sweetness of her lips, while his heart’s blood runs red and hot. He keeps sinking and surfacing, pulled under by feeling and coming up again, helpless against her.

What stays with you is how he holds two things at once. The fire, the red, the burning blood on one side, and the white, the milk, the purifying water on the other. He is not apologizing for wanting her. He is saying that this hunger and this tenderness are the same thing, that loving her completely is both the heat and the pure white light, and that she, his goddess, is at the center of both.
