Awata Nokiyama Jeewithen (Penena Nopenena) Lyrics

Penenena nopenena duraka indan
Numba awith hitha langata horen
Aawata nokiyama jeewithen
Nawathinna hithuwada aayemath aadaren

Dakina himiwena heenaye
Numba kothena hitiya

Nuhuru nupurudu heena aran
Langata awidin thurulu wemu

Nawathinna hithuwada aayemath aadaren

Mirinugwaka hitha thiyala
Numba duraka aduna
Ranchu gehena rane
Thanikamak denuna....
Asillaka duk heenen

Hitha hungak riduna...
Arutha nodakina senehe
Oya namak renduna

Awata Nokiyama Jeewithen (Penena Nopenena) Lyrics English Translation

From a distance, seen and unseen
you came close to my heart in secret
Without telling life you were leaving
did you think of staying again, with love?

In the dreams where I meet you and lose you
where were you standing?
In and out of remembering,
my life was there
Your eyes that light up when you smile

They rested on my shoulder…
It felt as if you
were a whole sky to me

Taking up dreams strange and new
you came near and we held each other close

Without telling life you were leaving
did you think of staying again, with love?

You left my heart out on a mirage
and faded into the distance
Among the flocking deer
a loneliness settled in…
caught in a sorrowful dream

My heart ached so much…
A love I cannot find the meaning of,
that name caught and held

Awata Nokiyama Jeewithen (Penena Nopenena) Song Meaning and Interpretation

This is a song about a love that has already slipped away, sung by a man who keeps meeting that person again in his dreams and in memory. She is gone from his waking life, yet she still comes to him, quietly, the way someone close once did without ever announcing it. The very first lines set the mood: she arrives “seen and unseen, from a distance,” sneaking up on his heart, which is exactly how grief works, the person is absent but never fully gone.

The ache running through the song is that she left “without telling life,” with no warning and no goodbye, and so he is left asking the question you only ask when it is too late: did she ever think of coming back, of staying? He does not get an answer. He only gets the dream, where he meets her and loses her in the same breath, and the small remembered details that hurt the most, the way her eyes used to brighten when she smiled, the weight of her head resting on his shoulder.

The imagery is where the heartbreak deepens. When he says she felt like “a whole sky” to him, that is the Sinhala way of saying she was everything, vast and complete, the thing that covered his entire world. Then comes the cruel turn: she left his heart sitting on a “mirage” (mirinuguwa). A mirage is water that looks real in the distance and vanishes when you reach it, so the line says the love he trusted and walked toward was never something he could hold. That is why, surrounded by others, “among the flocking deer,” he still feels completely alone. Being in a crowd does not touch the loneliness of missing one particular person.

By the end he admits he cannot even understand this love, “a love I cannot find the meaning of,” and yet her name has caught in him and will not let go. That is the quiet devastation the song leaves you with. He has no explanation for why she came, why she left, or why he still cannot stop holding on, only the certainty that he cannot.
