Pem Sihine Lyrics
Aadaraye paawena hengumak
Jeevithayak sewva..//
Puraane mage vu obe aadare
Miringuwak thanikamak vitharamai...
Pem sihine... sitha senasu seyavi..
Oba maage.. sitha rawatu maayavi...//
Maa langin langwela - oba edaa ki kathaa..
Mage dilindu loke maalingaawak kalaa..
Ee thenu maalingaa - sunwela giya dine..
Adanna kandulu itiri nokara yanna oba kiyaa..
Pem sihine... sitha senasu seyavi..
Oba maage.. sitha rawatu maayavi...//
Vassaanaye thaniwela - thurulu vi unusume..
Daengille patali un sandawa sundarai..
Nuba mage hema bhave - diwirala senehasin..
Ki kathawa mage loke thaniwela giyaa..
Pem sihine... sitha senasu seyavi..
Oba maage.. sitha rawatu maayavi...//
Pem Sihine Lyrics English Translation
A feeling that floats on love,
I searched for a whole lifetime..
Your love, which was mine long ago,
was nothing but a mirage, only loneliness…
Dream of love… the shadow that comforted my heart..
You were mine.. the illusion that fooled my heart…
You came close to me, the words you said that day,
turned my poor little world into a palace..
The day that palace I built crumbled away,
you told me to go without leaving even a tear behind to cry over..
Dream of love… the shadow that comforted my heart..
You were mine.. the illusion that fooled my heart…
Alone in the rainy season, wrapped up in the warmth,
the evening was beautiful, our fingers tangled together..
You swore by your love that you’d be mine in every life,
and that promise you made left my world all alone..
Dream of love… the shadow that comforted my heart..
You were mine.. the illusion that fooled my heart…

Pem Sihine Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is looking back on a love he has lost, and the ache of it is still fresh. He spent his whole life chasing one feeling, the feeling of being loved, and for a while he thought he had found it in her. Now he realizes that love was never solid ground. It was a mirage, the kind of shimmering water you think you see in the distance that vanishes the moment you walk toward it. All that is really left of it is loneliness.
The heart of the song lives in its title line, pem sihine, the dream of love. He calls her two things in the same breath, and the two pull against each other. She was the seyava, the shadow or gentle image that soothed his heart, and at the same time the mayava, the illusion that tricked it. That is the whole wound in one couplet. The very thing that comforted him was the same thing that deceived him, and he cannot separate the two even now.
The middle of the song shows why it cut so deep. He was a poor man with a small world, and when she came close and spoke to him, her words made that little world feel like a palace. That image of the palace is doing a lot of work here. It is not about money. It is about how love can take an ordinary, humble life and make it feel grand and worth living. So when she left, it was not just heartbreak, it was the palace collapsing, the whole bright world he had built around her falling to ruin in a single day. Cruelest of all, she told him to leave without even keeping a tear to cry over, as if he was supposed to walk away with nothing.
The last verse is the memory that hurts the most because it was the happiest. A rainy evening, the two of them huddled together for warmth, fingers laced, the world soft and beautiful around them. In that moment she swore she would be his in every life to come, hema bhave, life after life through the long cycle of rebirth. To a Sri Lankan ear that is the deepest vow two people can make, a promise that reaches past death itself. And it is exactly that promise, the biggest one, that broke and left him standing alone. The song lands on the quiet devastation of being given the whole world in words and then having it taken back.
