Mayawi Lyrics
Mayawi oba giya da man mulawi
Andure kandulen ma sitha gilila
Wiyeki miyedi giya jeewithe
Yali maa jeewe labuwa
Oba nodaka mohothak nathiwu kaale
Mage husmath oba yai sithu ee kale
Jeewithaye aadaraye mohothe
Ma ha herada yaawi

Aadare nohandunana oba yaawiMayawi Lyrics English Translation
Like a mirage, you left, and I was lost
My heart drowned in the tears of the dark
A life that had withered and all but died
I found myself living again
In the time you were gone, not a moment without you
Back then I thought my very breath had left with you
In that one moment of love in my life
You will part from me
Like a mirage you will go, you will leave me behind
The one who loved you with his whole life, you will leave
You will go, you will go
You will leave me behind
You will go, not knowing this love
I have no gold or pearls to give you, no silk robes
I don’t have the things you wished for in my world
And yet, with love overflowing my heart
I loved you as much as a flooding river
Not knowing that, you crushed and broke my heart
Knowing full well, you drove me out of my mind
Like a mirage you will go, you will leave me behind
The one who loved you with his whole life, you will leave
You will go, you will go
You will leave me behind
You will go, not knowing this love

Mayawi Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is watching the one he loves slip away from him, and he calls her a mirage. That is the word the song turns on, “mayawi”, something that looked real and within reach but was never truly his to hold. She came into a life that had gone cold, made him feel alive again, and now she is leaving, and he can already feel himself sinking back into the dark.
The ache here is not anger. It is the helpless kind of heartbreak, the sort where you keep loving someone even as they walk away. When she was gone for even a moment, he says, it felt like his own breath had left with her. That is how completely she had become part of him. So her leaving is not just losing a person, it is losing the thing that brought him back to living.
The most telling lines are the ones where he admits what he could not give her. No gold, no pearls, no fine silk robes, none of the things she wished for. In Sinhala love songs these stand for the comforts of a settled, well-off life, the security a family looks for in a match. He had none of that. What he had instead was love that overflowed his heart “like a flooding river”, a Sri Lankan image for feeling so full it cannot be held back. He is saying he gave her everything that was real in him, just not the things the world counts.
What hurts most is the last turn. She knew how much he loved her, “knowing full well”, and still she crushed his heart and drove him out of his mind. And in the end she walks away as if she never understood the love at all. He is left holding both truths at once, that she was a mirage who was never going to stay, and that he would still have loved her with his whole life. That is the quiet devastation the song leaves you with.
