A young man is picturing the girl he loves, and the picture is gentle to the point of aching. He sees her in white, in a sari, standing in the cool, dappled shade under an araliya (frangipani) tree, half coming toward him, half holding back out of shyness. The araliya, with its soft scent and its place around temples and home gardens, gives the scene a calm, almost sacred sweetness, and the cool shade is the quiet space where the two of them could finally just be together in peace. That word he keeps reaching for, peace, tells you the kind of love this is. It is not restless wanting so much as the longing to be settled and at rest beside her.
