Sanda Pini Diye Lyrics
(Sanda pini diye hima kumariye
Jeevita kale pipi mal vale....//)
Ma ha bandi gini kashtake
Kandu hel dige sada maruthe
Oba hama yanava api hama yanava.....
Nethin galana kandu lu vel gangavo
Saviya denava paradanna mayavo
Mal ronin malin piri dinen dine geve
Adare sada susum nove.....
Sanda pini diye...
Me lo vasana thura langa ma innam
Kandulu pisada obava sanavalannam
Adare hinavenna adare handai
Jeevithe ka hatath ohomai.....
Sanda pini diye...
Sanda Pini Diye Lyrics English Translation
In the moon’s dew, my snow princess,
a vine of flowers in bloom in the forest of life. //
Bound to me through the burning trials,
along the mountains and hills, in the raging wind,
you drift on, and we drift on together…
The tears that flow from our eyes, rivers of them,
give us the strength to beat back the illusions.
Full of pollen and blossom, day after day goes by,
and love is not only sighing…
In the moon’s dew…
As long as I live in this world, I will stay by your side,
wiping your tears, soothing you.
Love laughs, and love weeps,
that is how life is for everyone…
In the moon’s dew…

Sanda Pini Diye Song Meaning and Interpretation
This one is a duet, a man and a woman answering each other, and it works like a promise the two of them make out loud. They are not singing about the easy start of love. They are singing about staying, about holding on to each other while life keeps throwing hard things at them.
He calls her his “snow princess in the moon’s dew,” and you have to hear what those images mean in Sinhala. The moon and its cool night dew stand for something calm and pure and gentle, a softness that settles you rather than dazzles you, and snow carries that same clean, untouched feeling. So before he says anything about hardship, he is telling her that to him she is something cool and pure that quiets everything down. Then he sets her against the harder picture of their life: the “forest of life,” the “burning trials,” the mountains and hills and a raging wind they have to move through. The line about the wind, “you drift on, we drift on,” is the heart of it. They are like two things carried on the same gust, going wherever it takes them, but going together.
The second verse is the most striking turn. The tears running from their eyes are not weakness here. The song calls them rivers, and says those very rivers are what give them the strength to beat back the “illusions,” the false things and the deceptions that the world puts in their way. Crying together is what makes them strong. And the gentle reminder underneath it all is that love is not only sighing and sorrow, that even while the days slip by there are flowers and pollen in them too, real sweetness mixed in with the struggle.
By the last verse it has become a plain, steady vow. As long as I am alive in this world, he tells her, I will be right next to you, wiping your tears and comforting you. The closing line is the one that stays with you: love laughs and love also cries, and that is simply how life is for everyone. There is no fairy-tale ending offered here, only the comfort of someone saying I am not going anywhere, the laughing and the crying both, we do all of it side by side.
