From a distance both seen and unseen…

A man is talking to someone who came into his life without warning and left it the same way. He never quite had her and never quite lost her, and the first line holds that exactly: she arrives from a distance that is both seen and unseen, close enough to feel, too far to reach. She slipped up to his heart quietly, the way people do when neither of them has decided yet what this is.

The second verse is memory. He goes back to a dream he thought was his to keep and cannot even place her in it, which is how the mind works when it has replayed something too many times. What he does remember is physical and small: her eyes on his shoulder, crying one minute and laughing the next. Then he says she felt like the sky to him. In Sinhala song the sky is not just something beautiful, it is the thing that is everywhere above you, always there, and impossible to hold. Calling her a sky is love and helplessness in the same breath.

The mirage in the last verse does the same work in reverse. She put her heart on a miringuwa, the shimmer of water that isn’t there, and walked away toward it. He doesn’t accuse her of leaving him for someone better, only of chasing something that was never real. The line about the flock is the loneliest in the song: birds gather and move together, and he sits inside that crowd feeling nothing but his own separateness. Anyone who has been surrounded by people and still felt hollow knows the feeling straight away.

What holds the whole thing together is the question in the chorus, asked twice and never answered. Did you mean to stay? He isn’t looking for revenge or even for a reason, just for one honest word about whether any of it was meant. He closes by admitting that even in a love whose meaning he cannot work out, her name has stayed with him. That is the ache the song leaves you with, an affection that outlasts its own explanation.
