Thaniwi Sitinnai Ma Lyrics
Thanivi sitinnai ma adahas kale

I had thought I would be left all alone,
but it was you who came searching for me and changed that.
Even when I tried to explain, you would not listen,
and a world full of pain, it was you who brought it to life.
In this lonely, desolate world of mine,
my head does not bow even before a great emperor.
If only I could rein in these thoughts of mine,
but the sorrow I feel is still all about you.
My heart holds your wishes above everything,
yet the stares of the world around me turn to poison-tipped thorns.
Those thorns sink deep into the very depths of us,
and the pain that flows becomes like blood.

Thaniwi Sitinnai Ma Song Meaning and Interpretation
A man is left carrying a love that has only brought him pain, and he says so to the very person who caused it. He had made his peace with being alone, then she came into his life and changed everything, and now he is more alone than before. The hurt in his voice is not anger so much as a kind of helpless honesty. He cannot stop thinking about her, even though thinking about her is exactly what wounds him.
The middle verse is where you feel his pride and his weakness at once. He says that in his lonely world he would not bow his head even before a sakvithi rajun, a universal emperor, the highest king imaginable in old Sinhala and Buddhist storytelling. He is a man too proud to bend for any power on earth. And yet, for all that pride, he cannot tame his own thoughts, and every one of them leads back to her. The sorrow always has her name on it.
The closing image is the sharpest. He holds her wishes above his own, but the world around them will not let them be, and their stares turn into poison-tipped thorns. In Sinhala love songs the gossip and judgment of others is often drawn as something that pierces, and here those thorns do not just scratch the surface. They reach the deepest part of him, until the grief running through him feels like his own blood. That is the ache the song leaves you with: a love that should have been a comfort has become the very thing bleeding him, and he keeps loving anyway.
