It is a man watching the woman he loves get married to someone else, and the whole song is him speaking to her on that day. She is dressed in gold and silver for the wedding, lifted up into the bridal procession, and he stands there knowing she is leaving his life for good. That single image, her riding away in finery while he is left behind, is the ache the whole song turns on.

The Sinhala makes the contrast almost unbearable. All that gold and silver, the silks, the procession, are the markers of a joyful Sri Lankan wedding, the most celebrated day of a person’s life. But to him every bright detail is a small wound, because the celebration is for her union with another man. He says it plainly: the procession that should be happy is “burning down the world of love I had longed for.” The dream he had built around her goes up in flames on the very day everyone else is rejoicing.

What makes the song tender rather than bitter is what he chooses to hold onto. He does not curse her or beg her to stay. He accepts that from this day her heart belongs to someone else and will never return to him in this lifetime, and he says it twice, the way you repeat a hard truth to make yourself believe it. Instead of love turning to anger, he decides to live on the warmth she once gave him, to carry that small comfort with him.

The last turn is where it becomes deeply Sri Lankan. He reaches past this life entirely and into saṃsāra, the Buddhist cycle of birth and rebirth. If he cannot have her now, then in some life yet to come he will ask for her hand again. That is not a casual wish. It is the most patient kind of love there is, the belief that what is lost in one life can still be found across many. He lets her go to her wedding and keeps his hope for a lifetime that has not been born yet. That is what the listener is left holding, a quiet, unbroken devotion that refuses to die even when there is nothing left to wait for in this world.
