Me Mai Gaha Yata Lyrics
Me mai gaha yata dawask da
Vessata api unna
Rathu keta wage mai mal pipi pipi
Apata sewena dunna
Apata sewena dunna......
Mai mase eka sanda waruwaka
Seethala vehipoda wetena wele
Adara wiyowak sitin ebena sanda
Vehipoda se nethu kandulu sale
Vehipoda se nethu kandulu sale.....
Vehipoda wetunath issara wage
Mai mal pipunath ratha rathae
Apa dedenek netha ada ma pamanai
Mai gas sewene anduru pethe
Mai gas sewene anduru pethe.....
Me Mai Gaha Yata Lyrics English Translation
One day, under this May tree
we sat together in the rain
The May flowers bloomed and bloomed like little red beads
and gave us their shade
they gave us their shade……
On one evening in the month of May
when the cold rain was drizzling down
a parting from love rose up in my mind like the moon
and tears trembled in my eyes like falling rain
tears trembled in my eyes like falling rain…..
The rain still falls just as it did before
the May flowers still bloom, red upon red
but the two of us are no more, today there is only me
in the shade of the May trees, on this darkened path
in the shade of the May trees, on this darkened path…..

Me Mai Gaha Yata Song Meaning and Interpretation
A man stands again under the May tree where he and the woman he loved once sheltered from the rain, and everything around him is exactly as it was, except that she is gone. The song begins in a warm memory: one rainy day the two of them sat together while the flame tree above them dropped its red blossoms and gave them shade, a small, perfect moment of closeness. You can feel how tender that memory is, the rain shutting out the world and leaving just the two of them under the flowers.
The “mai gaha” he keeps returning to is the flame tree, which bursts into bright red flowers around the month of May, and the lyric leans on it the whole way through. Those flowers, “like little red beads,” are the colour of love and of that happy time, and the tree’s shade is the shelter the couple once shared. By the second verse the mood turns. On a cold, drizzling May evening the thought of losing her surfaces in his mind, and the image he reaches for is beautiful and sad at once: the parting rises “like the moon,” quietly and unstoppably, and the rain on the leaves becomes the tears in his own eyes. In Sinhala song, rain falling like tears is a familiar way of saying the whole sky is grieving with you, and that is exactly what is happening here.
The last verse is where it lands. Nothing in the scene has changed. The rain falls as it always did, the May flowers bloom as red as ever, the tree gives the same shade. Only the two of them are missing from it. “Today there is only me,” he says, standing alone now on a path gone dark, in the same spot that once held them both. That is the ache of the song, that the world goes on blooming and raining without caring, and the same beauty that once meant love now only measures how alone he is.
