This is a Sinhala Christmas carol that retells the night Jesus was born. It sets the familiar nativity scene in plain, gentle words: a poor cattle shed in Bethlehem, a baby asleep in a feeding trough on a cold night, and the people drawn there to see him. There is no romance or longing here, just the quiet wonder of the story Christians sing every December.

The carol leans on a couple of warm images. The “strange star” shimmering in the sky is the Star of Bethlehem, the sign that guided the shepherds and the wise men to the newborn child, so the line about asking the way and going to see him carries that whole journey of pilgrims following the light. The picture of mercy “flowing” for every living being is the heart of the song, the idea that this birth pours out compassion on all the world, not just a few.
