A young man is lying awake in love, and the whole song happens inside that warm, half-dreaming feeling where the person you love is so close in your mind that you can almost touch them. He is not telling a story so much as floating in a mood, and the words are built out of soft, cool, glowing images rather than plain statements.

The flowers that “drift down, gently, gently” are math mal, heady or intoxicating blooms, and right away that sets the tone. Love here feels like a slow fall of petals, sweet enough to make your head spin a little. He says her face is “painted on the still water of my eyes,” which is the old Sinhala way of saying her image is fixed in him the way a reflection sits perfectly on calm water. He cannot stop seeing her. When he reaches for the sun and gold and a “rain of flowers,” he is describing how being in love colors everything, ordinary evening light turns golden, and tenderness seems to rain down on him.

The middle of the song moves even closer in. The breeze carries open blossoms, lips lean toward lips looking for a kiss, and then comes the loveliest image, “the moon’s pollen drifts and falls.” In Sinhala song the moon stands for a calm, cooling beauty, and here its light is so soft it falls like fine pollen, a gentle coolness settling over everything. “Come close, close your eyes” is the quiet invitation at the heart of it. The line about the moon spreading “like a sea” with golden rays dancing behind a curtain of rain is his way of saying his whole inner world has lit up, vast and shimmering, the way it does when you cannot stop thinking of someone.

By the last verse we learn why he is awake at all. The coolness of being near her has set his heart swaying right through ra thunyama, the three watches of the night, the deep small hours when sleep should come and does not. Instead of sleeping he finds poems and songs forming on their own, and sighs spilling out of him. That is the gift the song leaves you with, the sweet, sleepless ache of early love, where missing someone turns into music almost without you trying.
