A young man is speaking to the woman he loves, and he begins with something very small. Put a bunch of flowers in your hand, he tells her. Then he answers his own request with a question: if she is holding them, what would he want a whole forest of flowers for? She is already the garden. That little turn sets the tone for everything that follows, tenderness said in the plainest words he can find.

The second image opens the frame wide. Life becomes a broad river and the two of them are standing on its bank. In that picture she is both the tree that shades him and the flower growing on it, the shelter and the sweetness in one. When a Sinhala lyric reaches for a river, it is usually talking about a whole lifetime moving past, so the line promises far more than a season of romance without ever saying the word forever.

Night takes over in the second verse. He is writing poems in a corner of his heart, the stars are falling like rain, and the breeze curls around his neck, blows past, drifts off. Nothing happens in that verse, and that is the point. This is the kind of love that shows up in small sensations, a cool wind on the skin at night, lines you compose for someone and never say out loud.

Then the mood shifts. Even the vines and creepers seem to be grieving, waving like hands that are looking for her, and he asks where she has gone. He does not stay in that ache for long. The song closes on its softest line: be calm like the evening and sleep in my heart. Dusk in Sinhala poetry is the hour when the heat goes out of the day and everything settles, so what he asks her for at the end is rest, a quiet place to lie down inside him. That is the feeling the listener is left holding, a love that offers shelter rather than drama.
