Niwaduwatath Lyrics
(Niwaduwathath man dan sankawen, game yanne
Kawuruth na paluyi dan ayeth, mage loke)..//
Dasath sitath rahase handuwa, thamath obawa sihiwi
Wasanthe awath oba gammanen, gihing wen wi
Koha gayu gi rawude bak mase, wele lande
Mihirak na senasimek, sithe mage
Dasath sitath rahase handuwa, thamath obawa sihiwi
Wasanthe awath oba gammanen, gihing wen wi
Mage pathum bondawi binduna, dasata kandula himiwi
Sitath na mage awath game, oben wenwi
Aethin idan obe wi semada, thamath obawa soyami
Ridum dey jiwithayama me mage, thaniwa hidimi
Niwaduwathath man dan sankawen...//
Niwaduwatath Lyrics English Translation
(Even for the holiday, I feel uneasy now about going back to the village.
There’s no one there, it’s empty again now, my whole world.)..//
My eyes and my heart wept in secret, still remembering you
Spring has come, but you left the village and went away
The koha’s song rings out in the month of Bak, across the paddy and the grove
There’s no sweetness, no peace, in this heart of mine
My eyes and my heart wept in secret, still remembering you
Spring has come, but you left the village and went away
My hopes blurred and shattered, and tears became all my eyes hold
My heart isn’t here even though I’ve come back to the village, parted from you
From far away I am still yours, always, and I’m still looking for you
This whole life of mine just aches, and I sit here alone
Even for the holiday, I feel uneasy now…//

Niwaduwatath Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man goes home to his village for the holidays, the way so many of us do, and finds that the place that should feel like home now only reminds him of someone who is gone. The one he loved has left the village, and without her every familiar lane and field feels empty. That ache of returning to a place full of memory is where the song lives.
He tells us his eyes and his heart cried quietly, in secret, because he is still thinking of her. Notice the season he chooses. He says spring has come and points to the koha singing in the month of Bak, in the paddy fields and the groves. In Sri Lanka the koha (the Asian koel) is the bird whose call announces April, the season of Avurudu, the New Year, when families gather and the village comes alive with celebration. That is exactly the time you are supposed to feel joy and togetherness. So when he hears that same bright call but feels no sweetness and no peace, the contrast is the whole point: the world around him is blooming and festive while he is hollow inside.
In the second verse his hopes have blurred and broken, and tears are all his eyes have left to hold. He has physically come back to the village, but his heart hasn’t come with him, because she isn’t there. He says he is still hers, from far away and forever, and he is still searching for her, even knowing she is gone. There’s a quiet loyalty in that, the kind of love that doesn’t switch off just because the person leaves.
What the listener is left holding is that familiar Sri Lankan feeling of going home and finding home changed. The village hasn’t moved, the koha still sings, the season still turns, but the one person who made it feel like his place is missing. So he sits alone, dreading even the holiday, because the homecoming that should comfort him is the very thing that hurts the most.
