(Sanda raata raata sanda vimanata taru arang giyaa
Oba aadareta matath horen hitha arang giyaa
Oba me aave maa soyaa sasare purudu athi nisaa
Pera aathmayee maa obee nisaa...//)
(Sitha aadare karanna baa kiyaa

Sanda taru milinava yaado
Yali hiru nega eedo
Mage hada gaheyi ee nisaa
Sanda raata raata....
(Oba jeevithema denna maa pataa
Mata aadare karanna aa nisaa...//)
Oba sanda kiranak veedo
Ghana andurak veedo
Mage hada gaheyi ee nisaa
Sanda raata raata....//
Sanda Rata Rata Lyrics English Translation
(Night after night the moon carried the stars away to its palace,
And your love stole my heart away too, without my even knowing,
You came looking for me because we have known each other before, through saṃsāra (the cycle of rebirth),
In a past life I was yours…//)
(Don’t tell me my heart can’t love,
Don’t sit there teasing me, telling me no…//)
Will the moon and stars fade away,
Will the sun rise again,
That is why my heart keeps racing.
Night after night the moon….
(You came to give me your whole life,
You came to me only to love me…//)
Will you be a ray of moonlight,
Or will you be thick darkness,
That is why my heart keeps racing.
Night after night the moon….//

Sanda Rata Rata Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young woman is in that early, dizzy stretch of falling in love, when her heart will not settle and she keeps turning the same question over. She opens with the night sky: every night the moon gathers up the stars and slips away to its palace, and in the very same quiet way, she says, his love crept in and carried her heart off before she even noticed. That is how new love feels here, something that happens to you in the dark while you are not looking.
The most tender idea in the song is the line about saṃsāra. In the Buddhist way of seeing life that runs deep in Sri Lankan feeling, we are reborn again and again, and the people we love now are people we loved in lives before. So when she sings that he came searching for her because they are old, familiar to each other through saṃsāra, that in a past life she was already his, she is saying this is not a chance meeting at all. It is two souls finding each other once more. That belief turns a simple love song into something close to destiny, and a Sri Lankan listener hears the weight of it at once.
Then come the doubts, the way they always come at the start of love. She asks if the moon and stars will fade, if the sun will rise again, and the real question underneath is whether this love will last the night or melt away by morning. The clearest image is the last one. She wonders whether he will turn out to be a ray of moonlight or thick darkness. Moonlight in Sinhala song is gentle, cooling light that softens the dark, so she is asking the question every heart asks: will you be the soft light that guides me, or the darkness I lose myself in.
What stays with you is that racing heart in the refrain, beating not from certainty but from hope shadowed by fear. She wants to give herself completely, she even pushes back at anyone who says her heart cannot love, yet she cannot be sure how it will end. That trembling between trust and worry, held inside the belief that they were meant to meet across lifetimes, is what gives the song its ache.
