What I wrote in the sky… /

A young woman is speaking straight to the one she loves, telling him about all the quiet, hidden things she has done for his sake. She wrote things in the sky and whispered things to the wind, and out of everyone, he was the only one who ever noticed. That is the feeling the song opens on, a love kept so private that it lived only in glances and unspoken signs, the kind only two people ever share.

The ache underneath it is that she gave him the one thing she truly owned. She says all she ever had to call her own was that single heart, and she handed it over to him. There is something both tender and a little sad in that line, repeated like she is turning it over in her mind. She had nothing else, only that one heart, and even that she gave away.

The second verse is the most beautiful part, and it leans on an image a non Sri Lankan would miss. She pictures herself sitting at the foot of “the great mountain of longing,” down in the dark at the bottom. In Sinhala song, sitting in the dark at the base of a mountain is the image of someone stuck, small, and without hope. Then she calls his love “starlight,” and says that if that starlight hadn’t carried her up to the mountaintop, she would still be sitting down there in the dark to this day, doing nothing but wishing for him. So his love is the light that lifted her out of that helpless longing. Without it, all she would have left is to keep thinking of him, over and over, alone.

What stays with you is the gratitude folded inside the longing. This isn’t only a song about wanting someone. It is a woman saying that one person’s love pulled her up out of the dark, and that even her deepest private feelings, the ones she wrote in the sky and gave to the wind, were always meant for him alone.
