A man has lost the woman he loved, and the whole world has gone on being beautiful without her. That is the wound this song keeps pressing on. Morning still breaks, the stars still crowd the night sky, the moon still rises full and bright, and to him every one of these feels like an insult. He keeps asking the same question in different ways, why does any of it still smile when the one face that gave it meaning is gone.

The song works by holding her up against the most beautiful things in nature and showing that, for him, she outshone them all, so now that she is gone the beauty is hollow. The koel, the Asian koel whose call Sri Lankans treasure as the sweetest sound of the season, used to remind him of her singing voice, and now its song only marks her silence. Butterflies dancing over a grove of blooming flowers, the kind of scene that should lift anyone’s heart, instead reminds him of the lightness she carried. The blue of the sky and the blue light in her eyes are knotted together in his mind, so the sky itself aches.

The last lines turn that idea as sharp as it gets. In Sinhala poetry, pearls and diamonds are the highest praise for beauty, a smile of pearl-white teeth, tears like falling diamonds. He flips it. If her teeth are not there to shine, real pearls mean nothing to him. If her tears are no longer falling, he does not want diamonds. The most precious things on earth are worthless next to the small, living details of the woman he has lost.

What stays with you is the loneliness underneath all those bright images. The world is as lovely as ever, and that is exactly why it hurts, because she is not in it to share it. It is the grief of someone who looks at a perfect morning and only feels how empty it is.
