Pathana De Siduwenam Lyrics

Pathana de sun we nam
Nosithu de siduwenam //
Me se..madema sihinayaki
Balan sith yoman
Ho ... balan sith yoman
Balan sith yoman

Sulu mohothada apa senasenne
Yali maha mera se duk wanne
Kisiwak naha sadahata rendune
Jeewaya tena aga pini binda we //
Me se..madema sihinayaki
Balan sith yoman
Ho ... balan sith yoman
Balan sith yoman

Lowa sundara de nopenenam
Deasak kumakata lebunado
Mihirak sawanata nodenenam
Desawan kumakata lebunado
Me se..madema sihinayaki
Balan sith yoman
Ho ... balan sith yoman
Balan sith yoman

Pathana De Siduwenam Lyrics English Translation

If what we long for fades away,
if the things we never expected come to pass //
All of this is just a dream
Turn your mind and look
Oh, turn your mind and look
Turn your mind and look

How short the moment that brings us comfort,
before we suffer again, heavy as a great mountain.
Nothing stays fixed forever.
Life is a dewdrop trembling on the tip of a leaf //
All of this is just a dream
Turn your mind and look
Oh, turn your mind and look
Turn your mind and look

If you cannot see the beautiful things of this world,
then what were eyes ever given to you for?
If no sweetness reaches your ears,
then what were ears ever given to you for?
All of this is just a dream
Turn your mind and look
Oh, turn your mind and look
Turn your mind and look

Pathana De Siduwenam Song Meaning and Interpretation

This is a quiet, reflective song about how fleeting life is, the kind of thought a Sri Lankan listener will recognise straight away as Buddhist. It does not tell a love story or a journey. It sits the listener down and asks them to look honestly at the way everything around us keeps slipping through our fingers. The refrain says it plainly: all of this is just a dream, so turn your mind and really look.

The middle verse carries the heart of it. We find comfort for only a small moment, and then trouble comes back down on us, heavy as a whole mountain. Nothing we hold on to stays for good. The image that lands hardest is the last one, life as a dewdrop sitting on the very tip of a leaf. In Sinhala writing, this dewdrop is a well known picture of impermanence (anicca). A single breath of wind, the smallest touch, and it is gone. The song is saying that our life balances just like that, beautiful and bright for a breath, then gone, and we should not forget it.

The final verse turns from that hard truth to something gentler, almost grateful. If you cannot see the beautiful things of the world, the song asks, then what were your eyes ever given to you for? If no sweetness ever reaches your ears, then why were you given ears at all? After teaching us that everything passes, it gently reminds us that the eyes and ears we were given are meant to be used, to take in the beauty and the music of a world that will not last.

What the listener is left holding is a calm, clear eyed kind of peace. The song does not weep over the fact that life is short. It accepts it, calls it a dream, and then asks us, while we are still here, to open our eyes and our ears and truly take the world in.
