Dinaka Mage Lyrics
Dineka mage divi gamane
Mata himi nati hadavata obage
Katat kalin maage wenna
Aaye labana janmaye
Obe atha gannata e bhawe
Dineka mage divi gamane
Hamu wela randuna kaalaye maage langin oyaa
Waradawa danune hita obe adarei mata kiyaa
Mata samawenna e warada keruwath edaa
Katat kalin maage wenna
Aaye labana janmaye
Obe atha gannata e bhawe
Dineka mage divi gamane

Sihi wela obawa nethu mage paalaluwen thewenawaa
Mata oyaa watinawaa jeewithetath wadaa
Katat kalin maage wenna
Aaye labana janmaye
Obe atha gannata e bhawe
Dineka mage...
Dinaka Mage Lyrics English Translation
One day, somewhere along my life’s journey,
your heart that was never mine to have.
Be mine before anyone else,
again, in the birth to come.
To hold your hand in that life,
one day, somewhere along my life’s journey.
In the time we met and stayed close, with you beside me,
I read it wrong and felt your heart was telling me you loved me.
Forgive me, even if I made that mistake back then.
Be mine before anyone else,
again, in the birth to come.
To hold your hand in that life,
one day, somewhere along my life’s journey.
Even now, when I see lovers at peace together,
I remember you, and my eyes burn with the tears I hold back.
You are worth more to me than life itself.
Be mine before anyone else,
again, in the birth to come.
To hold your hand in that life,
one day, mine…

Dinaka Mage Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is in love with someone who was never his to have, and instead of begging her to change that in this life, he sets his hope on the next one. That is where the whole song lives. He has accepted that her heart isn’t his now, so he asks for it in the birth to come: be mine before anyone else, let me be the one to hold your hand in that life. It’s a quiet, aching kind of love, the kind that has given up on the present but refuses to give up entirely.
The middle of the song is where the hurt comes out. He remembers a time when she was close to him, and he admits he read it wrong, he let himself believe her heart was saying she loved him when it wasn’t. So he apologizes for that, gently, almost embarrassed by his own hope. There’s no anger in it, only a man taking the blame for feeling too much.
Then he gives the line that turns the ache real for any listener: even now, when he sees other couples happy and settled together, he thinks of her, and his eyes fill with tears he keeps pushing back. That image of watching other people’s love and quietly grieving your own is something a lot of us recognize. He says it plainly, she is worth more to him than his own life.
What makes the song land is that wish carried into the next birth. In Sri Lankan thinking, shaped by Buddhist ideas of rebirth, love that can’t be had in this life isn’t always the end of it, there’s always the hope of meeting again across saṃsāra, the cycle of births and deaths. So when he asks to be hers in the life to come, before anyone else gets to her, he isn’t being dramatic. He’s saying the one thing a person can say when this life has closed the door: maybe the next one will open it. That patience, that willingness to wait a whole lifetime and beyond, is what gives the song its weight.
