Punchi Kumariye Lyrics
Hita hadana welawe
Nuba pamanak sinase
Kiyan mage punchi kumariye
Kiyan mage punchi sihinaye
Thaniwunu ma laga pipewinam adaren
Horehin wath ma desa balawinam adaren//
Kiyan mage punchi kumariye
Kiyan mage punchi sihinaye...
Hita hadana welawe .../
Obe denuwan pawasuwe ma hata adare
Melesin ma desa nethu sagawanne, hagawannada adare//
Hita hadana welawe ...
Punchi Kumariye Lyrics English Translation
In the moments when my heart cries
you alone are smiling
Tell me, my little princess
tell me, my little dream
If only you would bloom beside lonely me, with love
if only you would steal a glance my way, with love //
Tell me, my little princess
tell me, my little dream…
In the moments when my heart cries…/
Your two eyes told me you love me
hiding your eyes from me like this, are you trying to make me feel that love? //
In the moments when my heart cries…/

Punchi Kumariye Song Meaning and Interpretation
A young man is in love with a quiet, shy girl, and the whole song is him gently coaxing her to admit she feels the same. He calls her his “little princess” and his “little dream,” the kind of soft, fond names you give someone you have already decided is yours. There is nothing grand or dramatic here. It is just a boy asking the girl he adores to say the words out loud.
What makes it tender is how alone he feels in the meantime. He talks about “the moments when my heart cries,” the low times, and says that even then she is the one face he pictures smiling. In Sinhala, “if only you would bloom beside lonely me” uses the image of a flower opening, so he is not asking for much, just for her to come alive next to him, to open up the way a bud opens. He even says he would settle for less than that: just steal one secret glance my way, “horehin,” on the sly, and that would be enough.
The last verse is where the ache turns sweet. He has already read the answer in her eyes (“your two eyes told me you love me”), but she keeps looking away, hiding her gaze whenever he tries to catch it. So he asks, half teasing and half hopeful, is she hiding her eyes because she is shy, or is this her way of letting him feel the love without having to say it? That is the small, real truth of the song. Sometimes the looking away is the confession.
It is a simple, warm picture of early love, the boy doing all the talking and the girl saying everything with her eyes. By the end you are left with that gentle uncertainty he is holding, the hope that her shyness is really a yes.
